Let Children be Bored

The Family Connection

How can teachers support children who say, "I'm bored!" or who appear to be "doing nothing"? What do young children learn when they are bored? What IS boredom? Is it good for us? Children make choices about where to play, what materials to use and who to be with. As teachers we strive to always provide something for children to do. Is 'doing nothing" OK? Are the children "learning" if we don't keep them busy?

Planning Effective Group Times for Older Infants and Toddlers

The Family Connection

Group times for older infants and toddlers are teacher-initiated parts of the day that include opportunities for children to engage in active learning but why does it seem so hard some days? Intentional lesson planning – thinking ahead about how we can support our children's learning and then incorporating that into our daily plans – doesn't suddenly happen. Observing children’s interests and developmental needs are the keys to your success.

Back to Basics: Planning Group Times for Older Infants and Toddlers Workshop

The Family Connection

Group times provide opportunities for children to learn through exploration. Your role as a caregiver is to initiate an idea for an activity that supports infants’ and toddlers’ interests and development. How do we do that? What does it look like?

In this training we will go back to the basics. We will take a closer look at what happens during group times, how caregivers support children during group times and how to build an effective group time for older infants and toddlers. Participants will take away a list of open-ended materials that could be used for group times in their own classrooms.

Sorry, Not Sorry!

The Family Connection

We all want to help children to learn ways to navigate the big world. We help children learn letters, colors, shapes, and numbers. We sing songs and learn how to take turns. Why not teach children how to apologize and mean it? What is an apology? Why is it important? Why isn't, "Say you're sorry!" good enough?  Join us as we talk about what children need to experience and learn before they can offer a real apology- on their own and from the heart.

Refocus. Refresh. Restart (focusing on children)

You are the container, the holding place, for the fears and anxieties, the joys and the wonderings of each child in your classroom. Your containers may well feel quite full, especially as you may be experiencing your own worries and fears. You are the essential element in your classroom and the relationships you build with each child and family are the crucial factor for nurturing growth, resilience and hope. As you prepare your classroom (and yourself!) for children’s return, what should you expect? We will consider the unique and specific impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, especially its impact in vulnerable populations and those impacted by systemic disparities and racial injustice. In the second part we focus on the children—answers to their questions, responses to changes in behaviors and to strong or worrisome feelings. Time away from classroom life and the re-entry to possibly changed classrooms impacts young children’s development and behavior. We will consider key curriculum practices that will support a healthy, safe and even joy-filled refocus, refresh and restart.

Creative Movement is a way for children to explore movement through music, develop physical skills, channel energy, stimulate imagination and promote creativity. Creative movement uses body actions to communicate an image, idea or feeling. Through movement children learn about their bodies and each other.

For preschoolers, learning is more effective when it is fun and creative movement is just one way that teachers can add excitement and variety throughout the day.

The Early Literacy Lab (TELL)

We’re inviting a group of teachers to dive down deep into various elements of early literacy with us and explore how this information gets translated into actual classroom practice.

We’ll meet together three times over lunch(provided!) and follow up each training with individual coaching in your classroom. A pre-and post-ELLCO (Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation) will track changes you make. We think this specialized training series will be rich and rewarding for everyone (including us!). Because this will be a small, select group, it will give you a chance to get to know other preschool teachers. You’ll also come away with materials, lesson plans, and lots and lots of ideas for enhancing early literacy in your classroom.
